So the US had a disappointing tie today against Slovenia in the 2nd round of group play for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
My heart sank when the referee, seemingly for no apparant reason, disallowed a goal that would have put the US up 3-2 and all but secured their advance to the round of 16.
As upset as I was, the US still has a chance.
Right now the standings in the group are as follows:
Slovenia is on top with 4 points
Next is the US with 2 points.
England has 1 point followed up by Algeria with the goose egg.
England still has their game in a few minutes and if they win, they will go on top with Slovenia with 4 points. No biggy. England and Slovenia still have to play each other. If the US beats Algeria in their final game – they go up with 5 points. If either England or Slovenia win outright the US advances behind them with 5 points to their 7 points.
If England and Slovenia tie – then the US has to beat Algeria by 2 points to advance alongside Slovenia, depending on how the England vs Algeria game ends up. Now if England just destroys Algeria by say 4 goals… then the US and England advance… but we will have to wait and see if Rooney can actually get in the game and make something happen.
So – we still have a chance… and based on what I saw the men in blue do in the second half against Slovenia – I think it is a good chance.
